The Beam Success Story
BEAM Industries, the world's leading manufacturer of
built-in vacuum equipment, was started in 1957 by a group who had successfully managed the
BEAM Manufacturing Company home laundry facility the preceding ten years. This Webster
City, Iowa, washing machine plant was sold and the new "BEAM" was born when the
group, led by R.L. Sampson, decided to devote all of their talent, effort, equipment, and
resources to the development and production of quality central vacuum systems. As the
pioneer in the built-in vacuum concept for homes, BEAM was asked for help by many firms
wanting to enter the central vacuum field. BEAM responded by selling them complete private
label systems or vacuum system parts. Aro, Broan, Fasco, Nautilus, General Electric,
Trane, Wal Vac, and Pullman--to name a few. Most of the industry's major companies still
rely on BEAM for parts and 16 private label systems are currently in production for
leading wholesale and retail organizations in Canada, Europe, Australia, and The United
States.
The original 6,000 sq. ft. plant was expanded eight times
during the first thirty years and grew to 40,000 sq. ft. In 1988 construction was started
in Webster City on a new facility of 55,000 sq. ft., which could accommodate new equipment
and manufacturing methods. BEAM Industries is now operating from very modern facilities
and utilizing the new efficiencies as the production volumes continue to increase. A
completely new paint system, assembly line, and material flow layout are the highlights.
New offices along with testing and development areas are also included.
BEAM Built-In Vacuums are priced in the low range of other
major appliances, making them attractive and affordable to a large range of home owners.
The entire line includes a wide selection of power units, hose sets, and cleaning
accessories for every conceivable customer need. In addition, the pre-packaged
installation kits and detailed installation manual make the product easy to sell to the
do-it-yourself market. BEAM has always stayed abreast with the technological improvements
in vacuum motors, materials, and product design; and the current line is the finest in the
Company's history.
The Company has enjoyed steady sales gains and
uninterrupted profit every year since 1959. Truly an incredible performance, achieved
because the people in the BEAM organization have always maintained the diligence and
determination required to provide the best possible vacuum systems at very competitive
prices. This growth is being fueled by offering a quality product and having the best
total dealer support package in the industry.
In January of 1989, BEAM Industries, Inc. was acquired by
AB Electrolux in Sweden. Company founder and President, R. L. Sampson, has retired and
John Coghlan has been named President. BEAM Industries is operating independently and
continues to market products through the established BEAM distribution network. This
ac9uisition opened a new chapter for the Company and the proven priorities of the past are
being combined with a new emphasis on growth and full participation in the expanding
built-in vacuum industry.
